Intel Haswell Chip Uses 20X Less Power Than Today’s Laptops

During today’s keynote speech at the Intel Developer’s Forum in San Francisco, Intel CEO Paul Otellini demonstrated the successor to the Ivy Bridge chip, code-named Haswell. Set to debut in 2013, this new chip is designed for ultrabooks. What’s really impressive about Haswell is that it will consume 20 times less power than Intel’s current chips thanks to advances in silicon and power management.

Intel isn’t kidding about the power management either. The chip will allow notebooks to have 10 days of standby power, where the screen and most operations will be suspended, but the ultrabook will still maintain its Wi-fi connection so that e-mails, files, and tweets will stay up-to-date on the system. Anyone who has turned on their computer and waited for e-mail to download after a long weekend will appreciate this technology.

Going beyond 2013, they also showed off a chip that sips power so slowly that Intel demonstrated it running a system with Windows off of a single solar cell the size of a postage stamp. The chip is described as a “Near Threshold Voltage Processor.” Imagine how incredible it would be to see ultrabooks that ran solely on solar power

Now that might almost convince me to buy a new computer, if only someone comes up with a decent OS to go with it.

A solar powered system would be awesome wouldn't it? I'm sure someone would develop a decent OS to run on it.

For years they concentrated on increasing the number of transistors, which turned out to be relatively easy. Now they are tackling the harder task, less power consumption. Looks like the two may not be mutually exclusive. A Guy

Alongside lower power consumption something that would greatly improve a lot of things, not just computing, is more efficient batteries, advances in that area have been pretty slow over the years, if anything it is the increased efficiency in electronics that has got us where we are now.

I am kinda looking forward to inlet's ultrabooks. If they can in fact live up to their promises it really could mean that we'd have portable computing (not the 3 hrs of battery life:P)

That would be so cool! I wouldn't have to worry about battery power running low then.

Thank you Bear for the information, i think laptops or notebooks have been crying out for this chip.

The success of the Sandy Bridge chip, has really put Intel in control, im more leaning towards laptop use, but it can be a huge benifit to the pc user.. and Pilgrim made me laugh when he said if some-one could come up with a decent O/S

Solar power should be exploited more and it looks like this is one of the ways foreward.

I totally agree Jay. I have had a solar powered scientific calculator that I use at work for quite a few years now and never having to replace batteries is great. Also never running out of juice right when you need the calculator the most!
