    Quote Copyright, Credits and Linkback

I wished I could post this in blog but I am sure that a big part from the 70,000 subscribers don't even care about it. So instead of creating a drama, I am posting my rant here.

Been getting a few complains that I am crediting to the wrong person and not linking back to the "original" post. This happens especially on a lot on freebies when there is a method to get free license on a shareware. Recently I've even been accused of lecturing people on copyright when I am doing the same?

First of all, a lot of people don't know the real meaning of copyright. When someone copies your article word to word and uses your images, that IS copyright.

If you get an idea from somewhere, tested and verified that it's working and write an article based on your experience with the software, that's NOT copyright.

Next is on the credits. That's right, if you found something, you should be credited. However, you cannot always expect everyone to search for the original author for a computer tip that you first posted publicly. If a website missed it and you think you desperately NEEDED that credit, then perhaps a short polite email to notify the webmaster would do it. By posting nasty things publicly accusing the other party only portrays your childishness.

If you expect every website on the Internet to credit back on something that you've found, then I suggest you not to open your website to public. Keep it a closed community and use robots.txt to keep the search engine away from your site. Or better still, keep all the knowledge to yourself and don't even have a website. You are by nature a person that cannot share things without getting something back in return and you hunger for popularity.

I get bashing for not linking back. I also get bashing for not trying hard enough in finding the original author of a tip. Gosh, suddenly I felt so hard trying to share knowledge publicly that I learned over the Internet. Some people think that I hunger for popularity. No I don't want to be a celebrity blogger. Think... think again... why everyone only knows me as Raymond and nothing else. We're all here just to learn, share and discover new things.

I am damn sure that you are not a person working for popularity. A good evidence is your reply to the post named 'we must advertise this website' in chat category.

Ray, this is life. People are becoming jealous and they see minor mistakes using hubble telescope and try to magnify them. Don't take them seriously. I think you made your intentions clear.

    Ray,

Just a bit of advice "Don't react to a moron" because that's what they thrive on. Just state facts when your accused of what they think is wrong no more no less. I don't particularly care where useful software comes from and I know you do give credit where credit is due. Calm down and it is in your power to ban those who don't like your rules in your house they need to respect that. There is a proverb that fits here
"Keep your(their) foot out of your(their) neighbors house lest they(you) come to hate you(THEM)". Keep up the good work.

    Bill S.
