1: Gamers would suggest Windows XP 32 bit..
2: 64 bit or 32 bit OS depends on processor u use its the data bus[32 or 64]...
If ur Processor is 64 bit u can use 32 as well as 64 bit OS...
Basically if u use 32 bit OS on a 64 bit processor the remaining 32 bit resources stand waste..
not the case with 64 as all the resources are used....Speed's up a bit also the RAM capacity
increases...
32bit processors can run only 32 bit OS so no chance for x64....
But most of the games run smoothly on 32 bit machines i.e. OS x86 [32 bit]
NEVER THINK OF VISTA FOR GAMING even if it looks cool or has DirectX 10...
DirectX 10 can also be installed on Windows XP here's the link:

3: Its not at all necessary...Sometimes games do not function properly in x64 bit OS...

Most things are not written for 64 bit OSes yet, so it's not worth it to switch.

Sometime even the program is write for 32bit, it can be use on 64bit but the percentage is not high.
I can say Windows XP, this may change on the future.

64 bit only works well for processor intensive stuff like Photoshop or Video editing. For games, all that matters is basically the graphic card.

32 bit can handle 4 gigs of ram if you're running Vista Home Premium or higher.
