I use ashampoo snap3, but because it does video too, you might look into Ashampoo Snap 2 for print screen screenshots....

I use FastStone Capture, it's very simple and it only takes 672k of my memory and it has some pretty good features. Even though is not Free, it's pretty cheap at just $19.95 for a lifetime license. You can try a 30 day trial here: http://www.faststone.org/index.htm

Also have a look at Shup(free), it uses around 5MB memory and there's an in-built option to upload images.

And image quality/memory depends on which format you use.

As I understand it, you can install FastStone Viewer -- which is free-- and it comes with the FastStone Capture. Yeah, I know, go figure. I say, "as I understand it", because I read it somewhere and even though I did download it, and it works great, I can't swear that the quick, easy screen capture app that comes with it is actually the FastStone Capture program.

I just downloaded the FastStone Viewer and here's what I found:

    1. It doesn't capture scrolling window
    2. It doesn't support Screen Recorder
    3. It uses more Ram
    4. You can't use "Hot Keys"

the rest is the same except that the Image Editor that FastStone Capture brings, is a lot easier to use.

If you are trying to catch scrolling windows SnagIt is the best. I have tried many other screen cap tools but in vain. Lotus screencam is also pretty good, but for the money SnagIt is the best. 1 yr SnagIt lic is also available in the freebies section of the forum (it still works).

I highly recommend ScreenHunter 5 Free

    http://www.wisdom-soft.com/sh/sh_free.htm

I love how it can save directly to a file, without any interaction required. The quality is great. Use GIF for typical screenshots, or JPEG for screenshots of true-color images (such as your wallpaper).
