Angry computer shut down by itself?

My computer sometimes just shut down by itself after like 10-15 min turn on. The thing is if it can pass 15 min after turn on, it can work for all day with no problem. I have scanned for virus, spyware found nothing.

    Windows Vista 64 bit.

    Thank you.

mine restarts a lot. i found out that the problem was a loose power cord. check the cords, the outlets of your pc. maybe your power supply is constantly being interrupted

Were you playing any system intensive game or running software that might heat up the PC?

I had the same problem twice and it was both due to a faulty power supply. Usually caused because the fan either stops working all together or the fan turns off and on. You can usually hear a sudden "humming" when the power supply is going out. As well one of the main symptoms of computer lag brought on by the computer over heating.

Since you do not have any viruses, I suggest taking a look at the power supply in the computer as well as the cord, that might need to be replaced.

Or, the actual outlet itself could be corrupted or a loose wire preventing energy from getting to the power cord.

    Try this:

turn off the computer and unplug it from the wall, test the voltage in that outlet or plug something else that requires more energy than what your computer uses, into the outlet and let it run for awhile - if you see no problems plug the computer back in. You can also just plug your computer into another outlet, or even better, Plug it into an outlet protection cord, that prevents damage to the computer when it is suddenly shut off.

If none of that fails to fix the problem then take a look at the power supply and listen to it as the computer runs. Also be sure all the fans in the computer are running, if it is not working at all then you have a bad power supply.

It does seem to be a problem with the power supply. Sometimes, if the power requirement for your pc (for e.g.450 W) is greater than the rated power of your power supply( for e.g. 420 W), then your pc will spontaneously shutdown or restart to protect the components. Usually the power hogging culprit is the graphics card(especially those with 6 pin power connectors).

You can try disconnecting the graphics card and use the on-board GPU and see if it runs alright. If it does, then its time for a new power supply. Otherwise, it could be(as findingmyzen suggested) a faulty power supply.

Lack of info here. It would help if you provided info on your PC: Laptop, desktop. Are you living in an un-air-conditioned apartment in the UAE, or a basement apt in Tierra del Fuego. If you have a problem, more info is better than next to none!. The more explicit your problem is explained, the more likely you are to get an explanation of a solution. Words are FREE, use them freely!
