Can you access safe mode by pushing and holding F8 during bootup?
pacman -Syyu life not found in sync db

It could be hardware issue.. or malware problem. Or try entering safemode and run scandisk then try disabling autorestart on system failure. Thanks and good luck.

Does it restart continuously on boot-up, or just once in a while after boot-up? In the latter case it is probably a hardware failure (powerunit or corrupt memory). If it restarts all the time on boot-up you might try a live-CD (if SafeMode etc. does not help).

Well he can obtain another cd from a friend and reboot on it and do repair. Or he has to download from a link and burn and goes on. Or he can use a live linux cd

In this case he has to remember a restor point where windows xp behave normally.
Bartpe 9.9 has also a minywindows xp on it. So he can boot on bartpe and choose mini windows xp and can run some chkdsk commands.

Try a boot scan using Kaspersky rescue disc...
It might fix it if the problem is due to viruses...

Check to see is the fan on your cpu is working. I experience this before due to overheating.
