Pc randomly freezes up.
For about 2 months now my pc will randomly freeze up, now this can happen at any time either when there,s a load on it or not ie: playing a game multi programs running or just left on the home screen.
Things that i have done i have ran Everest ultimate for 12 hours bench marking the whole system - have swapped and changed the RAM - run memtest86 all the way through, no errors have been reported on either. Also i have scanned for any virus and such like and had a hijack report analazed it's all clean.
This morning i installed XP Pro on the same hard drive as windows 7 for a dual boot system and when it finished installing XP i went on to installing my security software and 1 minute into the install it froze again. Any ideas on this one, cheers.

CPU is AMD Athlon 64
RAM is 1.5 GB
I think i might have mislead when saying that it froze when installing my AV, it will freeze at any point in time not when any thing specific is being done, i installed XP to check if it was windows 7 OS that was the problem but it is not because it does exactly the same on XP OS.

If its not the software problem and its not the hardware problem. Then try and opening ur pc and wipe out the dust and if it still doesnt work.
If u let the pc on for a long time and didnt it went to sleep or hibernation,it could be sleep or hibernation prob, since my laptop freezes when its in hibernation or sleep mode. You should turn hibernation off.
But if its not that prob, then its most likely ur processor faulty or motherboard

did u try installing the same security software on both the OS maybe thats whts causing ur porblem

pc has had a good clean out, Hib and Sleep are set to never in power settings, there is one setting that i come across in advanced power settings though and thats "turn hard disk drive off" now this was set to 20 minutes, do you know what this setting for i have now changed that to never might not make a differance . is there a program that can identify what could be the cause either mobo or processor.cheers.

I thought Everest Ultimate might have showed some errors but it did not, ii any prog that could pin point either the mobo or processer as the problem

after turning off "turn hard disk drive off" , have you experienced this problem again? if you do then its definelty a hardware fault

I'm confused, did you install the two OS's on the same harddrive or same partition...? If the latter has been done, then be informed that its not a good practice and may be the culprit of your problem.
If not, then Pls review the settings of your AV. If it has been set to scan deeply, it may be using all your resources which results in pc hang-ups.. Sometimes, when i use kaspersky cpu usage becomes 100% and my pc hangs up for few minutes but becomes normal after sometime..
At last, it may be some hardware failure problem... Try rechecking your hardware and wire connections...
And as for your "Turn off hard disks" i prefer to set it to never..
