Cool help-did vista bootloader still remain in laptop after 'upgrading' to windows 7?

hi. i recently installed ubuntu and noticed while installation that it showed windows7 bootloader as well as vista bootloader. and when the grub replaced the normal windows bootloader after installation, i see that there are 5 choices! (first 3 related to ubuntu, 4th is windows 7 and fifth is vista??)

after seeing this, i remembered that a few days back, i tried to install and run speedfan but it detected my os as windows vista and didnt work.

now, my laptop had come with windows vista. i had done an upgrade to windows 7 (not clean install). but i think the vista bootloader should have been gone.

but another thing, in my laptop there is a 10gb d drive partition with hidden files which were already there when i had purchased the laptop. i cant understand those files but i think one of them might have some bootloader related backup of windows vista.

so heres my prob..do i have any windows vista remains in my pc? if yes, how can i safely remove them??
    help!

also, when i try to boot into windows vista on starting laptop, it shows an option to repair windows vista (so that means windows 7 did replace vista i think...)
i didnt go forward with repairing vista as i dont want to lose anything or mess up the laptop.

also i dont have any backups atm

Hmmm...I think you should try to repair the MBR. Insert the Win 7 upgrade CD, it might an option (like the normal Win 7 setup cd does) to repair your installation. Go there and choose to open command prompt (it's the last option if I remeber well) then type bootrec.exe /fixmbr. This option will rewrite the MBR code and will remove all the boot loaders installed except the Win 7 one (even GRUB) from the MBR. So you cannot access Ubuntu and you might want to install it again. And don't delete the 10Gb partition beacause it's used for recovery by Windows Vista. In a few words: If you want to install Vista again don't delete this partition.

The remains of Vista are on that ten gig recovery partition. That's most likely how GRUB's seeing Vista. I can't see any other way myself

Try easybcd from neowin to get a better look at what is been loaded at boot .... unless you plan to go back to vista, recover your 10 Gb of wasted space as with dell it's factory default settings..and only useful for a short period i think...
