Hi guys;
Thanks for the reply.
@Pilgrim-online/Ande;
Nice inputs there thanks and will keep that in mind. Although that it was just a "curiosity thing" which led me to post about a topic on VSC, this has become quite an interesting. Hope those who are having problems related to turning VSC off will have some idea here if they don't know about it in the first place as me:-)
@Pilgrim-online re: ATI,
--Yeah I like ATI and it did what I wanted far more better than Ghost. Have tried Macrium Reflect freeware last year and it too was okay. Did not have any problems there but limited to only full system image backups. Have not used Paragon yet...wanted to try the paid one whch I hear is better but have no license. I'm sticking with ATI11 Home.
@safeguy;
--Thanks for the reply and the additional info. Yeah, I saw that at Wilders also. I remember the Returnil mod has said that future releases of Returnl will not use VSC anymore or something like that. Just started out in Vista so I'm not yet keen on the effectiveness of it's system restore. But the read is good info. Am not planning on staying long with Vista Home Basic as my target is Windows 7 but not excited to go that way still. Just trying to have an ide of using Vista before jumping to Windows 7.
@Pilgrim-online/safeguy re: RVS,
--Returnil 2008 I hear was the best of the lot as compared to the 2010/2011 release. Use it in an old pc RVS2010 paid but I trimmed it down have encountered minor problems but not so significant as to remove it.

Modern-day Romeo
This is off-topic lol but since you guys mentioned it, I've used Returnil 2010 without the AV component...and it worked great for me. I actually plan to use it again one day but delaying it as I'm reviewing/reconsidering my security setup....
P.S. For those who didn't bother to read this thread or are still wondering:
All-in-all, it's simply recommended NOT to turn VSS off

It was the AV component in 2010 that put me off using it, I never update programs that have unwanted components in the newer versions.
I suspect I have at least a dozen programs that applies to.
All-in-all, it's simply recommended NOT to turn VSS off
From what I have learned since this thread started I would agree with you on Vista and 7 but on XP I will keep it disabled.

Hi guys;
Agreed! Volume Shadow Copy service plays an integral part in recovery/backup. Also asked Returnil mod at Wilders and it also plays a role in Returnil. I hope again that guys who have/were given to disable VSS/VSC to accomodate the complete scan of their antivirus/antimalware will consider this thread/post.

I put the service on manual. That way it's started when needed and not started if not needed.
Safe way to go. I disable very few services (fax, tablet,indexing), and put the doubtfuls on manual.
