Is Windows 7 a Vista Service pack in disguise

Something that has been bothering me for awhile, is windows 7 a service pack of Vista, don't get me wrong i like 7 there have been a few additions to 7 and new tweaks and it's based on the core archetecture of Vista.. as Vista has a bad rep and im aware of repeating myself part of me thinks it's just a cut down tweaked Vista,
My PC can handle Vista quite comfortably and windows 7 easier again..

What im looking for is opinions, from people that have used both, im dissapointed with Vista but i did like the new features compared to say XP and i may consider using Vlite and search around to see if i can transform Vista to bridge the gap between them, Vishal Gupta is one of the sources i could use and google is my mate..

Microsoft sold the new operating system as 7 knowing that most would not give it a chance if the word Vista was mentioned..

    Thank you in advance guys..

Vista was a failure in terms of words/reviews that goes around on tech blogs....sale-wise is arguable since most new PCS came with Vista as OEM. MS had no choice but to try and bring back a "good image" for themselves - and hence they improved upon Vista responsiveness, made a few tweaks to UAC to make it 'less annoying', added a few features such as Libraries, SuperBar, etc (or what some people would refer to as 'gimmicks') and came up with a new title for it - Windows 7. And they succeeded - well, at least they got a few thumbs up from some geeks online.

If they had released all that under a new service pack, they might not get the same kind of 'praise' they got for Windows 7 now since it would still be referred to as "Vista". (aka the dreaded Vista if you'd like that)

Whether or not Windows 7 is a disguised service pack is one that you can break about into a map of thoughts...and still may lead to no conclusion. But this you can be assured of - a rose by any other name would still smell as sweet. (and if you don't like roses, you'd not like it no matter what the florist says to you)

Thank you safeguy, very well written and an enjoyable read, i like how 7 handles and it did indeed redeem MS, They where well aware they had a disaster on their hands and needed to recover fast, and what better way than to paint over an old canvas and produce a master piece..

Windows 7 might be classified as a service pack, but quite a lot of the code is new, adding to, or replacing old code.

The Person Here has the exact feeling as you.I do think that 7 very much similar to Vista.People how avoided using Vista and switched 7 from XP,had a feeling that its an fresh brand new operating system because they never used Vista.Windows 7 is just like a service pack to Vista with Quite a lot of improvements.

I fall in that category of going from XP to 7. I didn't upgrade to Vista because of all the negative comments I heard about it. It wasn't until after I joined this this forum, that I found out there are some people who've had good luck with it.

I've used Vista and I've used 7, and I feel it's more then a service pack... especially considering it actually stabilized my system. So... hit and miss to each person.

Windows 7 can be considered much improved service pack of Vista. MS released SP2 for Vista, which has technical similarities to Windows 7 (MinWin, WDM 1.1, Updated Patch Guard, etc.). Still Windows 7 has many distinguished features like Aero, Taskbar improvements, Libraries, Updated modules (IE, Windows Defender, Search, and Disk Defragmenter etc.), Device Stage, Gadgets, much improved stability, and reduced I/O load etc. Technically, it is enhanced service pack of Vista.
