New PC's could boot up in seconds

New PCs could start in just seconds, thanks to an update to one of the oldest parts of desktop computers.

The upgrade will spell the end for the 25-year-old PC start-up software known as Bios that initialises a machine so its operating system can get going.

The code was not intended to live nearly this long, and adapting it to modern PCs is one reason they take as long as they do to warm up.

Bios' replacement, known as UEFI, will predominate in new PCs by 2011.

I doubt well see it next year in 'most' PCs. It would require reworking all of the MB assembly lines and redesign of most MBs.
The picture in the column, putting a floppy in in a computer drive, does not give me confidence thqt the writer knew what he was talking about.
    Just an opinion, as always.

    Wow, that's really interesting.
Do you think Windows Vista/7 will take advantage of UEFI?

It's a nice dream, but like Ande, I can't see it taking off completely next year. Yes it would be nice, yes I know for one I'm planning on updating two burned out mobos next year (one to set up a local media server, the other to set up a high def computer to be hooked into the TV, both would be about $250 since one's hard to come by around here, Socket 775 with more then four SATA ports...) and if it's on the mobos I buy, I'll use it... but as it is, the OEMs better not start limiting the UEFI's options like they already do with the BIOS.

Interesting news Mark . Anyone have tried this ??.
I don't need to know everything, I just need to know where to find it, when I need it.
