Chinese Chip Closes In on Intel, AMD
At this year's Hot Chips conference at Stanford University, Weiwu Hu, the lead architect of the "national processor" of China, revealed three new chip designs. One of them could enable China to build a homegrown supercomputer to rank in a prestigious list of the world's fastest machines.
The Loongson processor is based on the MIPS instruction set, the basic commands that a microprocessor understands. In contrast, Intel and AMD processors are based on the x86 instruction set. Engineers at China's Institute of Computing Technology (ICT) have added more than 300 instructions to the MIPS instruction set in the latest generation of the Loongson processor, and most are devoted to vector processing, a technique for processing data in parallel that can speed operations like graphics and scientific processing.

Thank you for the information BoyFriend it could prove a boost for all of us if they can rival the likes of AMD and Intel, may take a while but no harm having a go at the market, let the overclockers get to grips with the loongso processor first and then we can take a look at the benchmark results.. one to look out for in the future

Thanks boy friend for the info..
its good to see a Chinese company getting closer to AMD/Intel..
but, its my perception that some how the Chinese products are not reliable..
i used 3-4 Chinese things.. they are cheaper, some times giving more functions than the competitors .. but, quality wise they are worst..
hope some other companies can break the two giant's monopoly..

@princeaniket: Do not purchase cheap China products. Purchase quality products of China (availability depends on your area), and they reply about comparative quality.
Microprocessor is not a cheap thing. Moreover, it is under testing and will not be released before 2012-2013.

sorry to say but, have i quoted anywhere that i have purchased/used any " cheap " product..
its only quoted that they are cheaper.. compare to their nearest competitor, wid lots of extra features..
may be in my case the quality was not gud..
that's why i said ..
yeah.. micro processor is a costly item..
lets see how will it perform..
i m not saying they can not sustain..
its good to see a Chinese company getting closer to AMD/Intel..
they are global financial super power and we know why... due to their export/ trade surplus..
there must be some/many products which are good that's why they are succeeding..

Those are some very good points... But I am reminded of a time... way long ago, like say the 60's, when the stamp "Made in Japan" meant cheap, both in price and quality. I also remember the first time I saw a Honda Civic... in the mid-70s when they were tiny little things... basically a motorcycle with a body wrapped around it and not very good quality. However, the Japanese industry was looking VERY long-term. And now... "Made in Japan" means very high quaility: no country has machine tools that approach the quality and sophistication of those in Japan. Wouldn't surprise me at all if China had noticed this as well and hopes to follow their example. Just my opinion for whatever it's worth.

They must create one, improve it and be more superior...because I believe, it has something to do with military tech demands too...

indeed .. its a really nice observation dear..
they have gone from floor to multi storey buildings in terms of quality of manufacturing..
they are the tech super power and maintaining there position quite well..
hope China will also follow there example not only in goods but also in Defence related products as sad by Cyfer..

Well, all I can say is more power to the Chinese if they can pull it off. More competition in the market place is good for all of us consumers.
There may be a bit of snow on the roof, but there is still a fire blazing in the hearth!
