Big Grin Trend Micro chief claims open source software is insecure

INSECURITY VENDOR Trend Micro has caused a storm of controversy by claiming that open source software is inherently insecure.
Steve Chang, chairman of Trend Micro made the comments as the outfit released its security software for Android smartphones. Chang claimed, "Android is open-source, which means the hacker can also understand the underlying architecture and source code." He continued, "We have to give credit to Apple, because they are very careful about it. It's impossible for certain types of viruses [to operate]".

Trend Micro can claim what it wants. I don't see it as a reliable source myself...

    Screw Google! Ask me!

Bollocks. There's only 50% truth to that statement since Trend Micro is only looking at the glass as half-empty than acknowledging it as half full. Figure that out for yourself.

And yeah, since when has "hackers" been intimidated by whether something is open-source or otherwise???

Trend Micro cries "antitrust" over Microsoft Security Essentials
    http://forum.raymond.cc/spyware-viru...ssentials.html

Same kind of "crying" stuff at the end of year 2010. So question goes, why Trend Micro "cry" again at something what other developers do?

the open-source-is-less-secure myth was dispelled more than a decade ago. Take a look at Linux, Apache, Firefox, or Chrome -- four huge open-source projects, and all many times more secure than their closed-source brethren (Windows, IIS, Internet Explorer). Open source projects are more secure than closed-source projects due to peer and code review, and vested interest! Trend Micro fails to appreciate that while maybe a handful of people have seen the iOS source, thousands have eyeballed Android's innards to look for bugs. Don't forget that Android is also based on Linux, which must be one of the most rigorously tested pieces of software ever made.
    Good points. Thanks kv777
