Stranger, this isn't an answer to your question, but I wouldn't. A fresh install of Norton, and allowing it to update would be the best idea. I can forsee issues with Norton, which can be twitchy at the best of times. You have a fresh install, suggest you don't muck it up by creating problems with Norton straight off. If you have a friend with broadband, have them save the manual update to a USB, and install it that way. JMHO. A Guy

Normally there are 2 types of updates for antivirus:
1. Virus definition database
2. Program updates
As far as I understand about Norton, they don't frequently update their installer to reflect on the latest program updates. Even if you manage to backup the virus definition, you will still need to update the program.
It is unlike Kaspersky where you can create a mirror of the update database and program.

in program data ( mostly hidden folder) the virus definitions are there and they are regularly updated ...
may be if you want to try to take the latest backup of the virus definition and then try to incorporate in the new installation you can get the result... i haven't tried it self but, if you are eager for an experiments then its okiy..

A few years back on dial up this would have interested me, but if you have broadband it's no longer and issue, everything was a pain in those days.. as far as using AV's these days i would pick the one that suits you most as they offer differing user experiences.
