Confused Is there a difference between an SRT file and VOBSUB when adding subtitles ?

I 'm using VOBSUB and virtualdub to permanently add a different language subtitle to an AVI file and when in virtual dub in the add filter when clicking on add textsub 2.23 gabest i'm told VOBSUB 2.23 not detected , and the sub I have is a SRT file and is this why and if so , is there a way to change it , thanks ?

Do you have "vobsub.vdf"(besides textsub.vdf) filter in the virtualdub plugins folder?
    If not.. then reinstall vobsub
When you install vobsub.. there is an option to TELL vobsub where virtualdub and avisynth are installed, so that it could add it's self in to their's install folders.

When I install VOBSUB and choose custom install or any other install , the only components to install are plug ins and utilities . The option for VOBSUB for direct show , VOBSUB for virtual dub , textsub for virtualdub and avisynth are not listed . I tried using another program and created an SSA file and told invalid file when trying to add it or it showing up in virtual dub .
