McAfee Security centre is this enough??

    Hi all,

One of my friend bough a new laptop Dell, and it came with McAfee Security centre 11.0 preinstalled valid for 458 days. He was asking me, whether this is enough as an Anti virus, firewall etc. I have not heard about this security centre version and normally I've seen AV coming as trial version in new laptops. This is valid for more than 1 yr. Also he got Quickheal Pro 2012 along with laptop from the shop. Which one to use, remove Mcafee and install QH or keep Mc.

An advise will be highly appreciated.

    Thnx in advance

In Malaysia, purchasing a Dell computer online entitles you to a free 36 month McAfee subscription.
To me McAfee is heavy and makes the computer slow.
    Not sure on QH.

You have two choices of it, As Raymond said McAfee is heavy, so the choice only a QH. Unless you want to spend a little more money for it, such as Kaspersky, ESET, or other. Or for a while you can also choose free like Avast and Avira.

Hello nisanthp. I can very well understand your problem since the same thing happened when my dad bought a laptop (quickheal with his laptop and kaspersky from the shop). Now both licenses were activated and using either one of them made sure the other license is wasted (which is a waste, since the licenses are paid products, although we got them for free). So what I did was install Kaspersky on the laptop (since he's not so good with computers) and took the QuickHeal on my own desktop, along with MBAM. SAS, WinPatrol, Sandboxie and a few antivirus rescu disks. Thus both licenses were evaluated without any problems.

In your case, since both products have the same reputation, you might want to install both of them together: one on your computer and one on your friend's, with the above accessories as support.

Thank u all for the replies,

I will keep Mc for some time and if the system is becoming slow as Raymond pointed out then will remove and install QH .

@Blue dot : QH is a 3 pc license so I can install 1 in my system, 1 for another one and spare 1 for the owner .
Hows ur experience with QH. I cudnt find a convincing review. I have BD AV 2011 in my laptop which is valid for 1 more month. is it worth going with QH with the accessories or MSE. I dont want to spend on BD

    HI NisanthP

You have quickheal av pro 2012. Remember it has no firewall with it. U have to use an external firewall like online armor or comodo. As for detection rates quickheal is very good. It also is v fast and zippy. But if u are an advanced computer user theres no customization of settings. Now if Ur bdav is expiring then use quickheal but remember to use a good firewall as I think windows f/w is not enough even the win7. But putting an f/w can give u lot of uhmm..complicated warnings which may expose u to threats. Better use a router with firewall. But be sure quickheal is very good and very light. But i still tell You mcafee security center is better as it also has a firewall. I think the license is also upgradable to mcafee antivirus plus 2011 or 2012. I haad upgraded it for my uncle who purchased a Hcl laptop. I recommend u to upgrade your friends mcafee too as mcafee security center uses a old prob.. 2009 version av engine[ Pls im not sure of this think so, if any one can make clarifications pls feel free to do so].
Or else go get kaspersky is its just 500RS and its 3pc. Enjoy.

Thnx @raybky for the reply, as I told earlier I will keep Mc in friends system bcos he is not an advanced user, if I install a FW he will get confused with the prompts for opening port etc.

Kasperky which version is 500 rs, AV or IS? here in Dubai 1 pc/1yr AV was costing 1000/- Rs and for IS +1600/- so I opted it out. a normal K7 AV is 600/-

I would suggest not to keep spares. If you use up two of them, you can give the third one to a friend. As for QH, it's pretty good except for resource hogs. It has moderate detection and pretty high amount of false positives. The bad thing about it is it deletes suspicious files without the user's consent. QH along with MBAM, WinPatrol and Sandboxie is a very effective setup.
