why some security app phone home

i have heard a lot of complains about ZoneAlarm Firewall phoning home. i have ZoneAlarm with Antivirus and i have no idea what that means. It works pretty good in my laptop ( one of the lightest for its capacity ) and i was thinking to upgrade to ZAES . But hearing such complaint i believe i need to reconsider this issue. Give some understanding to that notion please

Don't know. Was using Zonealarm free since a long time. Since the free version no longer shows which apps are accessing net, dumped it.
