Post PeerBlock : Blocking known Bad peers on torrents and HTTP blocking.

Here's a funny peer that was trying to connect with me on a torrent :118.107.133.219
A whois revels that it belongs to Special Communications Organisation- Govt of Pakistan. Wonder what they were downloading. Trying to maintain their ratio I guess.

I actually found Peerblock out of a necessity. Downloading a torrent ,the seed: peer ratio was good, availability good, and still it gave very bad speeds, considering its size 10 Gb, i wasn't in any mood to wait a month. I just had a hunch, gave Peerblock a try, and there download speeds shoot up. A ton of the peers were supposedly Anti p2p and peers and in the likes of Special Communications Organisation- Govt of Pakistan.

Peerblock is primarily aimed at Anti p2p organisations, considering that I live in a country were neither ISPs nor Ap2p organisations serve notices(for now), quite unnecessary. But there are other uses it seems, they block known Spyware , Adware servers not only in torrent connections in HTTP too.

The fundamental problem is such "Bad Peers" can always acquire new Ips, hence limiting the effectiveness of almost any list. Here , I`d say it offers partial protection. But something is always better than nothing.

HTTP Blocking: PeerBlock by default blocks all those bad peers in its list in the browser too. Cuts ads, spware, adware sites to some extent.

    Description:
PeerBlock is a free software firewall application. PeerBlock is the successor to PeerGuardian (which is only actively maintained in linux). It blocks incoming and outgoing connections to Internet IP addresses that are included on blocklists accessible over the Internet which may be selected by the user, but also any addresses manually specified by the user.PeerBlock mainly works in tandem with the blocklist provider iblocklist.com.

    Download: http://peerblock.googlecode.com/files/PeerBlock-Setup_v1.1_r518.exe
Lists: http://www.iblocklist.com/lists.php(-Not required, Lists can be downloaded from within PeerBlock)

There must be at least some peerblock user here, i'd like to know what the users think of it??

I used PeerBlock for a few months and then uninstalled it.

Pro: It does its job brilliantly.

Con: I cannot recall its name but it produces a data file, when mine got to 1GB and was still growing with each update I decided enough was enough and removed the program.

The default history file size is 1000Mb.

The total installation is 13Mb for me, largest file being 2.5mb ,which is a block list.
