Usually, system takes too long because of a file system fragmentation, try to defragment your HDD, after comp should be working faster.

Have you use any tweaker programs lately? There are some which contains options that you change how fast example that right click menu appears

Try single click and see if it is the same (takes some getting used to, but my system is set to single click always)
Open any folder> Organize in upper left> Folder and search options> Click items as follows> Single-click to open an item (point to select)
Do right click context menus open slowly as well? If so, it may be a [url=http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm]context handler issue. A Guy

Do I take it you mean when you double click to open a file?
If so, does it happen on certain types of files (exe, doc, jpg etc) or all of them?
Any delay on right clicks?
Does single click select the file straight away?
Installed any software since you had the problem?
Viruses, file corruption, sofware bugs, networks, antivirus software and a load of other things are possible causes, so as much info as possible is helpful here.

Perform a clean start to see if you are correct, then narrow it down.
