I think the process of updating your motherboard's BIOS have been refined. It's still somewhat risky, but not really as much as it use to be.

dazofdarlo, depending on the manufacturer, some newer motherboards can update the BIOS in Windows.
If can't, you usually need to put in a system floppy boot disk and boot it up on DOS. Then in DOS, just run a command that'll update your BIOS. The step-by-step instruction can be found on the manufacturer's website.

Its a whole risky process. Dont do it.
If theres a little misplace in 0s & 1s,(BIOS writes in bit level)
thats it your (BIOS) will be dead. It happens mainly with fluctuations in voltage. Your Warrenty period will also be canceed(if yo update your BIOS.) If things gone worse, then thats it theres your pc lying dead infront of you. So my suggestion is to update at your own risk using your instincts............;)
I'm not well at ENGLISH. Sorry for any mistakes.........

The risk of updating your BIOS is, if you have a power outage, your motherboard is dead. But there are some advance motherboard that has backup BIOS.
I am not sure if updating your BIOS will void your warranty... If it does, manufacturers shouldn't put it out for people to download in the first place.
Just make sure that you don't power off or restart your computer while the bios updating is running. It should only take a minute or two.
P/S: I've updated BIOS on many computers and so far 100% success.

ok thanx guys i think ill mull on it a bit then may have a go when im a bit more confident lol, also why fix something that aint broken :)

Bios updating is indeed risky, and it should be done only if you know that your motherboard needs it in order to improve for example support to a certain processor type etc. If everything has been working fine, it's no use to update it. (:
