Raymond and others...g'day! Have had a couple of computers with Windows XP installed, and when the "turn off computer" button was clicked, it did just that...it powered off! I have just formatted a friend's HDD and reinstalled XP and all is well...EXCEPT, it does not power off (as explained above), it does the usual save settings, and "shutting down" procedure but then a message "It is now safe to turn off your computer". I have searched Control Panel and BIOS, but cannot find any way of changing the shut down procedure to power off automatically in the shut down routine. Any help would be appreciated.

Your hardware must support this, for example an ATX motherboard and power supply should support it, but an old AT motherboard probably doesn’t support it. You also have to have ACPI or APM enabled in your BIOS.
Also ensure the registry value below
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Set the value of "PowerDownAfterShutdown" to 1

Thanks for your reply gravitygun.
APM was enabled. I changed "Power down after shutdown" from 0 to 1. Unfortunately, I still get the "It is now safe to...." message on shutdown and have to manually power off.
It's no great prob to do this...was just hoping I could setup auto poweroff. By the way, it is a rather ancient MB, Gigabyte GA-7IXE4, but it is ATX.
Thanks again and I will be in Adelaide for a day or two of test cricket this weekend. It's always a good test in Adelaide, but I'm afraid I will not be cheering for your team! All the best. Pete.

If it used to work before, it should work now too. Try this.
1. Download PowerOff http://users.pandora.be/jbosman/pwroff30.zip
2. Extract and run Poweroff.exe
3. Select Local Computer
4. Select "Poweroff" for action (NOT Shutdown)
5. Click Do It
See if the computer is able to totally power off without displaying It is now safe to turn off your computer message.

Thanks Raymond,
Have done exactly as you say, but the routine is still the same. By the way, I don't know if this computer has ever powered off automatically after shut down...I was referring to other computers I had owned or come across with XP as the OS.
I think I'll simply tell my friend it's an old machine and lacks that capacity. Turning off the power switch will give him some exercise he badly needs!
Thanks for your trouble.

Oh, then most probably the computer is too old to support this feature :P
