I have a sony 1GB microdrive everytime i plug it into my computer it reboots. I have a old computer that has it's usb ports in the back i tried plugging it in without putting my fingers near the power cord or restart button. I'm running a 6 year old computer with windows xp home edition, it has a gigabyte technology motherboard. i scanned it for viruses with avg free edition 8.0.100 but no viruses.i need to be able to use this usb because it's my school one.

Ok, so it's your computer problem. Now boot to Safe Mode and plug in your USB drive. Does it automatically restart?

Sounds to me as if your power suppy (PSU) is too small to cope with the extra load needed to run your usb drive and trips out on overload. Install and run PC Wizard 2008, it is free, to get all the information about your PC. http://pc-wizard-2008.en.softonic.com/
