In audio Quality is actually depended on the Kbps not mainly on Format .Higher they are higher is the quality.
And for your question these are my thoughts. :)
WAV is supposed to be of highest quality ( Also the largest size)
MP3 can provide the same quality keeping the size moderate.
RM format has the lowest quality of all.

Aac+ and Flac audio are proberly the best ,as for video mpeg4 ,for size xvid or divx and mp3 but depends on the compression used ,lower the better ,i just happen to do a lot of video editing "most haunted fan" :)

    Video:

HD Videos are generally of formats AVI(divx) or .divx or MKV or MOV. (Best ones)
And to play these HD Video with full glory, here's the best things that you need -
    - AC3 filter (freeware) for sound embedded in HD videos.
    - CoreAVC (shareware) bundled with Haali media splitter
    - Media Player Classic which can load the above filters & codecs.

Formats that are generally of low quality : flv, rm(video), mp4(sometimes).

    Audio:

WAV is the clearest & contains even frequencies that are not audible to humans. The file size are huge. The sound here is raw.
BTW, Aac+ and Flac audio are also the best ones but it isn't that famous as it is backed by Apple.
MP3 is good with very good compression - depends on encoder - if it's LAME ( a little bit lossy) as it's free & Fraunhofer MP3 which is loss less mp3 & also a shareware.
And RM need NOT be the lowest quality - but it's more used in streaming music. I have heard songs with bit rates 20kbps & are quite clear !
Correct me if I am wrong anywhere.
