    Post Memory usage of Firefox and Messenger

    From Ray's article in the blog today, http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/09/21/firefox-and-ie-auto-convert-url-text-links-into-genuine-clickable-links/ , the screen shot shows memory usage of Firefox and MsnMsg.exe as 186,676K and 19,352K respectively. On my machine the memory usage for Firefox, after an hours use and with 3 open tabs, is 83,244K and that of MsnMsg.exe is 10,600K.

    My question is what would contribute to the difference in memory usage?

    I'm using FF 3.0.2 (build 6) and Messenger 2008.

    If they have things like Youtube videos open or heaps and heaps of tabs although yesterday I had like 15 tabs open and it only said like 80 mb. But if i open a youtube video it boosts the amount of memory usage used.

    Yes Opera is also quite good in memory management but Tests have shown that Firefox 3 has overall least memory usage

    The memory usage for my Firefox is so high is because I keep all the cache, links/URLS, username and passwords. I had it since Firefox 1 :P

    Here are some good articles on reducing the Firefox memory usage:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_CPU_usage
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Reducing_memory_usage_-_Firefox
    * http://www.davidtan.org/tips-reduce-firefox-memory-cache-usage/

    Check Firefox Memory Usage:

    Type " about:cache?device=memory " in the address bar and hit Enter. Firefox will display your current number of entries, maximum storage size, storage in use and inactive storage.
