    Cool Misssing volume control

My volume control in the taskbar has disappeared. When I try to install it via the control program (Sounds and Audio devices) I get the message "Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the volume control program has not been installed. To install it use the Add\Remove programs in the control panel." I've tried in Add/Remove Windows programs but can't find it there. Can anyone help? Many thanks.

Yes, I have sound; it's only the volume control icon in the taskbar that's missing.

The volume control is available from the Control Panel under Sounds and Audio Devices; place a check-mark by the Place Volume in Task bar. If you don't find Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel, then

Goto Start > Run and enter Mmsys.cpl and press enter

    BTW,
You can try to reinstall your sound icon by going to Control Panel -> Add / Remove Programs, Windows Setup tab and then double click the Multimedia icon and place a checkmark on Volume Control. If it's already there, take the checkmark off, then click OK. Then go back in again and place the check mark on.
    This will hopefully reset it.

You will need to expand from your Windows installation disc but to save all those trouble, just download from the link below and copy it to your C:\Windows\system32\

    Wink Fixed!

Thank you, R, your suggestion was the only one that worked. Opened the downloaded file and presto! I got my little volume control icon.

Hi prashanth....I am using XP SP3 and I dont see any Windows Setup tab in my add/remove programs window. There are 4 tabs and none of them has Multimedia icon. Am i searching at right place or is there anything else ?

To Add a Windows XP Component

    1. Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
    2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
    3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components. The Windows Components Wizard starts.
    4. In the Components list, click to select the check box that is next to the component that you want to add. If the check box for a component is shaded, only some of its subcomponents are selected for installation.

To view a list of the subcomponents, click Details. Click to select the check box next to the subcomponents that you want to add, and then click OK. If the Details button is unavailable, the component does not contain subcomponents.
    5. Click Next.
    6. If the Insert Disk dialog box appears, use one of the following methods:
      • Insert your Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then click OK.
      • Click OK to locate your Windows XP installation files. In the Files Needed dialog box, click Browse, locate your Windows XP installation files, and then click Open. For example, the installation files might be in the D:\I386 folder.
    7. In the Completing the Windows Components Wizard screen, click Finish.
