Did you try reinstalling Windows or using a live cd to boot? Nice Thread title btw.

Did you check for viruses in your hdd? And yea you should try reinstalling xp.

Try to get into the BIOS, set the boot sequence to CD first, reboot from your installation disk and see how far you can get.
Addition:
Seagate has some very sophisticated tools for fixing wizard tools (for instance Seatools) for fixing disrupted HDD. What you could do is put the HD in your friends PC again. install one (or several) of these Seagate tools on his PC and let it/them look for the problem.

In my earlier posting a syntactical redundance error crept in -apologies- but I take that the suggetion is clear: try one of those analytical tools developed by Seagate to service their HDD.
But perhaps the solution is in the link provided by Sai Charan. Just try on error and give some feedback as to how you fixed it.

So when you boot pc with Windows CD you are not getting that Windows Setup Screen ?
