What are CBR files?

Yesterday I downloaded an ebook from a torrent website. I thought it was in a picture format or PDF format. But when I opened the folder it had these files labeled as .CBR( something like that). I don't have any program that opens this type of file which leads me to my first question: What are CBR files?And, which program do I need to open these files?
