Question on HDD backup restoring ?

I formatted my c: then install Windows XP SP3, After install all needed drivers, Softwares, all tweaking for faster performance, Now i want to make a copy of my c: drive as a image in a Other partition of hdd or want to backup on External USB Hdd or on a blank DVD.

then if any problem happens. i want to format again my c: drive and restore that backup with the help of any bootable cd as it was.

I Know many program commercial and free can do this. but i didn't use any of them yet.

i found this and it would be good bcoz raymond suggest: http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/06/17/how-to-create-full-windows-backup-by-imaging-without-using-norton-ghost/

I will try this but one question is ithis , if i restore backup image from rescue cd then what would be happend with previous windows and c: drive data . will it format the partition before restoration or or just overwrite.

It will overwrite files to their original location. It will not format the HDD.

    Not really.

If you've created an image for C: drive and you save the image file to D: drive.
Then you boot up the computer using the rescue CD and restore C: drive using the image that is saved in D drive. It will actually remove EVERYTHING on your C drive and restore it the way it is when you created the image.

So yes, it will format the drive.

    One more question is now

we can write directly backup on Blank DVD too. and i will go for this option.
But I've only one DVD writer. then how i can restore it from DVD . because Rescue Linux Disk would be in a DVD writer.

Raymond i want to know from u because u have experienced with this software.

Well, I'm not Raymond, but you could always boot one of the iso files via pendrive.

I am not very sure about this but try booting up rescue cd, then eject and enter any disc, see if rescue cd will try to look for the backup image there.

Can, but you will definitely get blue screen and won't be able to login to windows.
You should read this on how to solve the BSOD problem.

The Macrium rescue disk automatically ejects out of the CD drive when you are ready to being restoring (you need not have the Macrium rescue disk in the CD drive while you restore a backup) so you can put in your DVD and restore from it.
