Well we have professional photographers here that can talk more about the said brands. Both brands are good, but on the top of the line Pro DSLR my vote goes to Canon.
There's a lot of factors needed to be consider in choosing the right brand for you.

i have CANON IXUS 9515 and i bought it in 13000 Indian Rupees 9 months before
in the same range another version of Sony cyber Shot is there with my friend and its clarity is not so good compare to CANON..
i would suggest you to go for Canon..

why canon ceyfer? because they used 5D mark ll for sony's shot there new nex camera and also the panasonic like you posted few days ago,
DSLR (digital single lens reflex) is that right? sony DSLR has a built in image stabilizer in the base but canon the stabilizer is in the lens thats why there lens is much more expensive than sony, but sony did'nt have updated there sony alpha900 (A900) instead they focus on there sony nex.
if your votes goes to canon any particular brand you would suggest? i cant afford the 5D mark ll its too expensive the here, and i like higher than 550D...
i know your the expert ceyfer about DSLR iam starting to like photography nowadays

You should buy your camera based on features and cost. I started out with a Nikon D50, then moved to Canon, Now I use a Canon 50D. Just do some research on features or cameras for the type of photos you want to take. New points & shoots can now do as much as a DSLR.
