The EOS 50D is a 'smaller' version than the 550D. The max picture size is smaller, the LCD is smaller, the pixels are less, the auto ISA for the 50D is 100-1600, where the 55D is 100 - 6400.
If you're looking for speed, though, the fewer pixels are the faster. The 50D is rated at 6.3 fps, where the 550D is 'only' 3.7 fps.

I'd say [IMHO] that it really depends on wha you are going to use it for. If you're not a pro, there are a LOT cheaper ways to go and get as good as, or better image.

i have my own opinions, which disagree with a bunch of the 'professionals. Your best be is to cruise some of the Photography magazines, either on the web or on paper, and look for comparison studies. Another way is to google for what you are looking for and see if you get meaningful results. If you're going to spend $600-$2000 ON A camera, you better know what you are getting into. Also, if you are looking for video, with the capability of taking pictures, most good video cameras can now take stills too, and you'll get a better video.

Makes a lot of sense. Try to find camera comparisons using google or whatever. A number of magazines and labs publish product reviews and comparisons on the web.
