complicated hardware problem
hello friends, im new to this hardware stuff n hope to get some help...
let me first tell u my pc specs...
gigabyte motherboard, intel p4
512 ram...
80 gb sata hdd
no external video card...
intel chipset
atx power supply...
this is what happened... i started the main source power the pc worked it way through normally n suddenly it completely switched off may be a power fluctuation.
then when i tried to fire it up it showed me the bios n switched off again... then after few attempts i made it to power management in bios where it showed +12V fail (i dont know what does it means)...
then after a few attempts when ever it try to start, the fan on top of the cpu is spining but nothing come on lcd... power light blinks for sometime like 1 blink per secound for 5-6 secounds n than again switches off... (at this moment sata hdd n ram were connected)
i took out sata hdd n tried again the same thing happens...
after 2 hours of trying i connected the hdd to mobo n now it turns out that whenever i try to start power when hdd is attached to mobo the psu just starts for fraction of secound n nothing happens, fan on cpu to doesnt spins, no power supply to mobo or any other part...
if i take out the hdd then psu starts power supply fan is spinning but the power led keeps blinking, nothing on lcd, no POST....
i cant understand what is wrong with which part...
1. is the psu malfunctioned?
2. mobo is dead?
3. hdd has bricked?
before this my pc worked very fine... no new addition in hardware...
please someone try to solve this...
thanks...

I have a feeling your PSU is fried... the voltage error would imply that to me. Try swapping it out with a different or new PSU.

Definitely a problem in the PSU. Sounds like a faulty capacitor.

What colour is the blinking light on the psu.
I will rephrase that, thats if you have a blinking light on the psu.

I am with their opinion, psu problem.
Try not to force by switching on and off a lot, try a working psu

I too believe that it is the PSU's fault.
Get it change and stop risking your other computer components from being affected by it.

thanks every one for replying...
sorry for the late follow up....
okay now i have given my psu for diagnosis lets see what comes up....
till then i dont have a spare psu... i will get one n try it...
is it possible that due to my repeated tries the mobo n hdd may be affected....?
knowing the fact that first the power was coming on even when the hdd was connected but now the power is not supplied at all when hdd is connected...
i dont know which is psu light...
the blinking light is on the front of the cabinet n starts when power button, which is usually near the reset button, is pressed... it is green in colour n the colour doesnt changes...
thanks

Yes, uncontrolled surges may have damaged circuitry in your motherboard.

This may sound silly but i have seen it happen and ask, have you tried a different, socket to plug your pc into other than the one that it's normally plugged into.. I have seen burnt plugs that give intermittent power surges.. and the house wiring may possibly need an overhaul.. sometimes the easiest solution is the one that is overlooked..
