Kingston issues its first USB 3.0 thumb drive: DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0

Kingston issues its first USB 3.0 thumb drive: DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0

It ain't the first, but it's Kingston's first, regardless. The DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 is the company's first foray into the wild and blossoming world of high(er)-speed thumb drives (following the likes of A-DATA with its own N005), with this guy in particular pulling down read speeds of up to 80MB/sec and write speeds of 60MB/sec. It's available in a trio of sizes (16GB, 32GB and 64GB), with a five-year warranty affixed to each. Regrettably, such speed and capaciousness won't run ya cheap, as these fellows are priced at $89, $138 and $270 in order of mention. Nothing the corporate card can't handle, though.

Thanks Prakash the first i bought was the data traveller 512 mb and is trusty.. now im going to put the DT Ultimate on my wish list, maybe a 16 Gb as they are really expensive, and i would be worried about losing them.. the idea of USB 3.0 is a big factor and i will be looking into this more before i build my new PC, it's going to take at least a year and i will have plenty of time to keep up with the moving trends..

You are gonna build your own PC this time, huh Jay? Good for you. I've been kicking that idea around myself for a while. If we get lots of snow this winter like they predict, it might be a time to do it. One thing I'm sure of, is that I'll have a few choice words to say along the way, when something doesn't work right!
There may be a bit of snow on the roof, but there is still a fire blazing in the hearth!

I have to ask this, because I've not been paying full attention to USB 3.0. I know it's speeds, I know the ports are able to be used with 1.0/1.1/2.0 USB devices.... but will a 3.0 flash drive work on a 2.0 or lower USB port? That's the one question I haven't known yet.

Also, as for building my own PC... I might do that for the next one, seeing as the i5 machine I bought and will upgrade as I go... I'll build a PC before I die, I know that much!

I've heard that on older PC, you need to install a USB 3.0 card into a PCIE slot to support the higher speeds. But you've got me curious now and I'm going to research it further.

USB3 is a good idea, but how many computers really support it? I guess I could go get a USB3 card. Anyone know how much they are going for?

Hahah, that's what I've heard too... the perhaps worst part is that my computer's not that old, it's just commercial... and it's not supported. So I might have to upgrade the motherboard if I want more advancements.

Not many by default, and when I checked NCIX.com, I saw the price tag of $60

Looks like Dell are putting USB 3.0 support in their new PC's and laptops, haven't searched prices, yet but i have been looking at quite a few motherboards, and most are still USB 2.0, the only decision i have made is the case i want to use..it's going to take time for me to complete as money is tight, the plus side is i can save a few bob each week, before i settle for any hard ware i will ask for opinions on the forum,
I think John i like the idea of building my own, but the cost will be higher, but it's the satisfaction that money can't buy, like many other projects i took on and enjoyed the challenge most of all
