    1TB-capacity Optical Disc

Just browsing teh internet and came across this:
TDK Corp showcased an optical disc with a capacity of 1 Tbyte (1,024 Gbytes) at Ceatec Japan 2010, a trade show that runs from Oct 5 to 9, 2010, in Japan.

The company realized the large capacity by forming 16 recording layers, each of which has a capacity of 32 Gbytes on each side of the disc. . .

"The material has already been used for part of a Blu-ray disc," the company said. "So, it does not have a problem of, for example, durability."

The only problem that has to be solved is the thickness of the disc.

"According to the specifications of the Blu-ray Disc, the thickness of a recording layer has to be 100μm or less," TDK said. "But the recording layer of the new disc is 260μm in thickness. And it causes the aberration of an optical lens."
I'll be interested to see if the problems can be fixed and what it'll sell for. If they pllan selling it to home users, I guess it will have to be reasonably priced. Optical storage is currently on e of the cheapest ways to store data though personally I find it slightly unreliable (scratches, poor optical drive, etc.).

I can't see this form of media taking on, optical media has poor durability compared to flash memory, the fact that it is double sided would mean no way to identify the disk once it was out of its case. Also there will be the cost of a new optical drive to read and write the new disk as well as cost of the disk(s) itself, and finally if you have that much data that you would want to back up it would probably be cheaper to just get another TB HDD and run it in RAID

They could just make the Blu-ray disc cheaper. 32 GB for the Optical Disc is enough.

Thank you for the information Student, enjoyed the read but can't ever see a use for it myself i would prefer the optional external drive far cheaper solution, not for the average home owner

It would be nice if blu-ray was more affordable. From my experiences there has been a notable improvement in the video quality (as to be expect). It might be a while though until the price falls to where DVDs are at.
