Bad sectors on the HDD in my HP Laptop
I was trying out Linux Fedora last night from a Live CD and when it was loaded, it gave me a message saying that I had a number of bad sectors on my HDD. Afterwards, I ran the built in disk check from HP, which said my HDD was normal and then I ran the Windows disk check, with "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" checked. That scan also said that my HDD was running normal. As a result, I'm kind of confused and was wondering if anyone might offer their opinion on what might be the problem.
Thanks, Bear

Linux is very sensitive to HDD failure so there's a high chance that your HDD is failing. Download CrystalDiskInfo portable and Acronis Drive Monitor. They should give reliable results.
Screw Google! Ask me!

Thanks Alboguy! Both of the above mention programs say that I have a bad block on the HDD and sectors of have been reallocated. ADM says that the drive is at 18%. So it looks like I will be replacing it soon.

Often the built in Windows utilities will not pickup things. That's why , when you have a Seagate drive, you want to run the Seatools from a bootable disc, for instance. I never trust disk check alone. Often the HD manufacturers tools will also correct low level problems. Laptops, unfortunately, have their limitations. A Guy

The laptop has a Hitachi HDD so I did go to their website and downloaded their tool. It is suppose to try and fix any errors on the HDD, so I guess we will see what happens. It doesn't hurt to try. Thanks for the suggestion!

Yes, some imaging software, such as Paragon, will not finish if there are bad sectors. Paragon will give you the option to not use VSS. But if it can't complete with VSS, you should definitely check it out. If you ran diskchk, it would likely report no problem. But run the manufacturers disc tool, and see what it might find. A Guy
