Intel Recalls all Sandy Bridge PCs

Thought that i'd pass along the news.
In a move that’s reminiscent of the famous Pentium floating point bug, Intel has issued a recall of all new Sandy Bridge PCs and laptops that run its latest generation of processor.

The recall is to fix a problem with the Series 6 chipset, used in all Sandy Bridge systems. The company says that the SATA ports within the chipset could degrade over time. This would impact the performance and functionality of any SATA-attached device such as hard disks and optical drives.

The recall, which Intel claims will cost the company around $1 billion is being organised with OEMs and it will affect computers that have literally only just been delivered, as the Sandy Bridge chips have only recently come on the market.

An Intel spokesperson told PC Promagazine that arojnd 5% of the SATA components were likely to fail with the failure rate rising to 15% for heavy users. They went on to say that while 8 million Sandy Bridge chips had been sold, only a small number had been delivered to consumers.

While the company has rectified the problem, the new motherboards won’t start arriving at OEMs until the end of February. Full volume production has also been halted until April. It’s not all bad news for Intel though as the Sandy Bridge processors are bound to be successful anyway and are streets ahead of the power currently offered by AMD chips.
Sometimes it really is worth waiting.

Intel has to face huge loss (+ distrust) due to insufficient testing. Thanks Student26 for bringing this in our notice I will delay my project 'Operation Sandy' for few months until they releases good chipsets

Thank you stundent i read this today and the mother boards are on hold, at least it was something that was brought to light early on and gives them time to fix the problem, most of what i had read where from reviews, rather than anybody that had purchased the chip, even though it has a fault, it looks like it's going to be a killer chip...

Hi Jay. Are you going to wait for Intel to get the problem fixed with Sandy Bridge, or will you buy an i7 950 like you were talking about previously?

For an average consumer like myself the chip looked great but since I just got a new rig I was lucky enough not to have purchased this chipset. Sandy bridge looks like it can put the cheap GPUs out of business.
Good link Boy it made for an informative read

Im going to stick with the i7 950 Bear and the X58 motherboard, i do believe Intel will sort the SandyBridge chip out and it had its fans way before the release of the new chips, i remember Ande mentioning the release of the boards last year and the first release i saw for myself was an Asus board and chip on Overclock 3D only a review, but potentially looks great.. i laid out what i thought would suite me and will try and stick to a plan, with so many new hardware releases it's easy to get side tracked and hope that it works the way i want it too...

Hi Jay. Trying to stay on top of technology is a tough game indeed! It makes good sense to just stick with your origianl plan, as it sounds like you've done your homework on it.
