    old pc question

    hi guys,

a cousin has an old motherboard that he intends to resurrect so his kids can have another pc. kids keep quarelling over the new Phenom pc that he has. the old mobo is an Asus K8 SE Deluxe model(with AMD Athlon 64 CPU 800MHz).

well I am not a tech person really just fascinated by computers....i see that it still uses DDR 400 and has 3 slots...and is 64 bit capable. hmmm...i was thinkin how can you go 64bit on that is you have only 3gb max out on it...? my rig with Win7 x64 8gb ram --upgraded because x32 OS will only read 3.XX ram even if you have 4gb installed...(am I right on this or just confused...i mean what's the use of being 64bit capable...)

i have an old board myself an Asus P4xxxxx(forgot the model..3Ghz) lying around in my room and i have successfully experimented using Windows7 x32 on it 3gb DDR 400(also). in fact was surprised as it was a single core and all...was quite zippy/not sluggish..average i'd say with the old agp (Sapphire 256mb x800 xxx --forgot again).

well here's the question. i know the K8 SE Deluxe is i think much better but will i was thinking that when we have finished assembling what he wants it will not perform as my P4...ihe agp card that he will be using is an nVidia FX550 256mb. i am keen on well..my P4(give it to him with the ram..I think it's still there ha ha )..what do you guys think...?...on you guys what will he go for...? the old AMD or my old P4...?

just wanna try to ask here for ideas for the first time ideas/opinions please..thank you

(--boyfriends says just schedule the kids gaming routine --doesn't wanna help)

Most people only know that 64bit operating system is to address the system for more than 4GB issue. However, it the 64-bit systems offer direct access to more virtual and physical memory than 32-bit systems and process more data per clock cycle, enabling more scalable, higher performing computing solutions. That is why you see most Windows servers are on 64 bit and not 32 bit, no matter how little ram it is installed.

That AMD is with 800Mhz cpu and P4 is 3Ghz? If that is the case obviously the P4 is going to perform better and faster. I personally would just go for P4 instead of AMD because the older versions of AMD has heating issues. Although it won't crash, but it's hotter than Intel.

    hello raymond,

wow a reply from you..this is a first forme though it's my first post in hardware thanks for the reply here. we were also thinking to try to run Win7 x32 on it the AMD K8, while the OS for sure will be XP (good for gaming..kids these days) the cousin seems to be insistent that Win7 will run better with the AMD...is that right...? can you share some more inputs/ideas...thanks you raymond

    hi all,

i got this issue sorted out last week and i gave my P4 and we assembled the K8 also. Raymond was right. the P4 kicked shit out of the K8 and at 2gb at that for both Windows 7 x32 and XP. the K8 was maxed out at 3gb of ram. waste of ram there...same set-up but you really can see the difference in speed. the kids are happy also because they got two! added a fan also for the K8 and upgraded the PSU from 300W to 500W. the P4 was same(even got 1gb of ram from it and transferred it to the K8).

mod you can close this one. thank you!

    thanks all

    Good To know that .
I don't need to know everything, I just need to know where to find it, when I need it.
