    New CPU fan and it won't boot..

    I bought my Desktop PC a new CPU fan.

    Well, The fan works... However, it doesn't boot into Windows after installation.

    ... I tried clearing CMOS and load default settings but it didn't work.

    Next I tried to pull out and re-plug RAM... and it won't POST now orz...

    Any ideas??

    Thanks!

    Hi Fuki and welcome to Raymonds, before you replaced the cpu fan did windows boot ok, is the CPU fan header been replaced in the same header as the original, sometimes windows fails to post if it detects the CPU fan to be running at the wrong speed, what motherboard do you have?
    The more information the better

    Motherboard: ASUS P5GL-MX
    CPU: Intel P4 3GHz

    Before I replace CPU fan, it boots perfectly if the fan is spinning... (sometimes it didn't spin...)
    fan header is same as original: 3 of the 4-pin slot (no Q-fan control)

    Before I clear CMOS, it shows "overclocking failed!".
    Fans speed is ~2350 (which is within the spec 2500 +/- 10%)

    Many thanks!

    Might your fan be drawing too much power and because of that, you don't have enough power to get into Windows?

    In other words, a bigger power supply needed?

    I don't think it's the power supply: a normal small fan (no extreem fans) won't be more than 5W (12V @ 0,4A). But you can try it, just disconnect some hardware you don't need to boot. (2nd hard drive, DVD-rom,(graphics) etc)

    ya my fan is a 12V * 0.4A ~4.8W one.
    In fact I removed the DVD drive (and floppy!) long time ago already.

    Have you tried Asus support forums fuki, it's a situation where if your pc was in my hands i could fix it hands on, there are various reasons and the ones mentioned above are the more popular, even adding a pcie card, it could be a bios problem, if i where to have my seagate external drive connected my system will not boot to windows i disconnect and it boots as normal.
    Have you tried booting with the old cpu fan?

    What LEDs show when you try to boot and is there a warning beeb.

    I personally don't like to fix/mess with old computers.
    There are many times when I am sure that the problem is A but I ended up making B not working.

    Can you be more specific on "doesn't boot into Windows" and "the boot died at the Windows XP logo screen"?
    Did you get a blue screen? Or did the computer just restart?
    Have you tried booting in to Safe Mode?

    * no blue screen
    * just restart
    * cannot boot into safe mode

    I will try to gather help from the professionals nearby at the weekend then;
    Thanks all, I'll come back once it's fixed.
