Is it bad to have all data in a single drive?

    Hello all,
I just purchased a new laptop, and all it have is just one C drive and one Recovery drive,

Just wondering, does keeping all my data on my C drive will have any performance issues if i am going to install some games and apps(like NFS-hot pursuit, Crysis2, and VS2010 and web expression, etc)?

I only a have one HDD installed in my laptop as well, and have it partitioned into two drives, one for the OS and the other for data. I'm not sure if this speeds up the operation any, but it helps to keep the drive containing the OS less cluttered.

If you clean the clutter and schedule a defrag for your drive then it should run smoothly, If the question is should you keep the data on one drive the answer is no, partition your drive and keep important data on another partition, if windows becomes corrupt and no longer bootable the data on the other partition should be safe and there is always risk of disk failure, all in all i would say have an external drive as well as the hard drive partitions or use a DVD to save data too..the biggest factor is how much of the hard drive is in use, you can always run installers from another partition..

Windows has alot of built in tools to help your laptop run smooth, it's like the old saying "having all your eggs in one basket".

True, At least better split into two drives, (C) for the OS and (D) for Data. The division in size up to you or in the balance. When something happens, your data will not be lost.

Agreed in splitting the drive into two.
    1. Too much data on one single drive causes fragmentation and also clutter. Fragmentation = slowdown. Clutter = hard to locate your files.
    2. Malware attacks the system drive most of the time.

like everyone has mentioned.. it can clutter the drive.

on the other hand if you have a hardware or software error and need to format the drive, you risk losing all your data! either create a new partition or backup to an external drive!
