    CPU Fan speed

Hi all. I have an Asus MB that came with the AI Suite software that allows me to easily adjust the fan speed of my CPU. Right now I have the fan set at 1300 rpm, which is about 40%. This keeps my CPU at about 33-35c at idle. I am thinking about increasing the fan speed to help the CPU run cooler when it is under load, but I would like some input as to what speed I can safely set the fan, so as not to burn it out too quickly. My thanks to anyone who would be willing to share their thoughts on this.

Better to fit a standard size and it was normal. Adding to the speed of the fan so it sometimes makes loud noises. But if no wheezes, it does not matter.

You're not going to 'burn out' the CPU fan if you run it 100%, that's what they're designed to do. Simple advice is to run the fan as fast as your ears can handle. I've had several Arctic Cooling coolers with fan speeds about 2400rpm and they're barely audible. Why not just turn on the auto fan control options in the BIOS and let the system speed up and slow down the fan as it needs to.

Agree with solin and hal9000. As long it doesn't sound like a storm in there and bearable to you, you can even adjust it to the max speed.

The fan should be a PWM fan, and if connected to the fan header, would adjust speed as temp rose. But you can certainly crank it up, it will just get noisier.

Thanks guys!!! I didn't realize that the cpu fan would adjust speeds automatically, as the temps rose. That being the case, I am happy with the core temps at the current levels, so will probably just leave things as they are. Thanks again for helping out this newbie computer builder!

I use the AI suite myself Bear and have it set to silent although i don't use the stock cooler and as mentioned by A Guy the fan adjusts speeds automaticlly..you can monitor the temps and play around with the settings, the board and cpu should be protected against failure for incorrect settings, and written in the manual. Unless your overclocking i would leave it at default, do you have ROG connect with that board ? you could use your laptop to do realtime overclocking if you wish.

Thanks for your input Jay. I have decided to leave the fan settings at the standard mode. I don't seem to gain a lot by running it faster and it is pretty quiet, so I will let it be. I do have a an ROG connection, but if I decide to OC I think I will buy an aftermarket cooler first. For my needs however, this PC is very fast with the SSD and I don't think I need to OC.

I can almost guarantee the GPU fan is noisier than the CPU fan. If you would like lower CPU temps, you can experiment with the BIOS "Monitor" settings which Jay mentioned. Silent, Standard...Takeoff is it?

With 4 case fans already blowing, I can't even tell the diference when I adjust the CPU fan. But the noise is actually pretty minimal and it sure keeps the inside of the case cool. The fan settings in AI Suite II for the CPU are Silent, Standard, Turbo and User. I have experimented with all of them and it doesn't seem to make much of a difference in the idle temps.
