    Boot times for new PC

Out of curiosity, I decided to install Windows 7 on my WD 1Tb Sata III HDD to compare the performance of a Sata 6 Gbs HDD to a OCZ 120Gb Vertex SSD. To be honest, the Sata III HDD performs much faster than anything I've had before. Windows 7 boots in about 30 seconds and the applications I have installed load within seconds. Windows 7 on the SSD boots up in about 10 seconds and applications load almost as fast as I can click them.

The point I am trying to make, is that most computer users would find the performance of a Sata III HDD very adequate and probably wouldn't feel the need to spend the extra money on an SSD. However, for "speed enthusiasts" like myself , I would personally choose an SSD to run the OS from.

Thank you for sharing Bear as im yet to purchase the new SSD, and use the western digital black myself and although boot time is good and programs are fairly smooth, i reckon the winner for opening multiple apps will be the SSD..
One point i did take is the mechanical drive does perform well.

like you im hoping for the better response rates from the SSD as i like instant... i see more price drops on the 6.0 Gbps drives which is encouraging plus added tokens of six euro, still high price per Gb at the moment.

If it saves me the annoying noise my computer has when it starts up, that would be nice too. My computer sounds like a harrier jet taking off. And I know it's the hard drive spinning, because nothing else is making that bleeming noise.

Although my WD HDD is pretty quiet, the SSD of course is super quiet and I like that also.

My laptop has a "good" boot time, about 1 min 40 sec... which I think is good for it's hardware. Also I'm planing building my first custom PC, till now I can buy only the processor ( an Intel i7 920, found this for a great price ). Got a list of other hardware but will wait until Christmas and get discounts

Hi Lizard. Good to hear that you plan to build your own PC. I can't tell you how much I enjoying doing so and know that you will also. My new PC was in the "planning stages" for almost a year, so your time frame isn't bad at all!

Indeed, it's what I like about SSDs. A buddy of mine has one... so jealous and so nice.

Once I have tried SSD, I would never use SATA for operating system drive anymore.

Boot time is but one advantage of a SSD. It is just easily measurable. It is a great overall improvement, but not the be all, end all But once you go SSD, you'll never go back

PS, in an ongoing endurance test of several SSD's, one has had to stop due to lifetime throttling, the Samsung 470 finally died at 525.6 TB, 478 TiB
