there had been some grinding noise out from my PC and Windows didn't load
Hi Raymond and all,
Some of you guys here got a long years of experience in computer hardware fixing,
I really need your help for my old PC.
My PC is 3 years old, running windows XP SP3, 3.05GHZ CPU,
2GB RAM with a 130GB HDD powered by a CoolerMaster 550W PSU.
Recently, my computer's power button cap was broken and I removed it.
I used a pen to touch the small projection on the power switch (as shown in red circle) to turn on my PC,

Since then, something strange kept happening:
I could hear some grinding noise from my PC, and
I could not see the Windows loading even thought the PC had been turned on.
At first I was thinking if the noise was caused by the HDD,
so I disconnected the Power Cable from the HDD to see if the problem would persist.
But after I had disconnected the power cable from the HDD and turned the PC on,
I could still hear something keep grinding every 10 seconds for a minute and then the PC turned off by itself.
Sometimes I could go to the BIOS setup screen but sometimes I coundn't because the PC just kept rebooting every ten or twenty seconds.
I have no idea what exactly happen and why there have been some grinding noise out from my PC even if the HDD had been disconnected from the PSU.
Could you give me some idea please?
Thank you.

Check to see if the connector to the CPU fan is not in the way of the CPU fan's blade.

after taking hellnoires advice i would put the unit on a table remove the side panels and try that way to locate the noise, making sure all fans where clear of cables, it's much better to fault find on a table you don't need any cables but the power cable...
Its a process of elimination, removing various hardware untill the fault is found, remove the hard drive or graphics card if you have one that is not inbuilt..
a grinding noise is a definate... if was buzzing it would be electrical... when it is on the table it should prove easier to spot..
the problem sorting is faster than the explanation...

@ Jay I had my new PC up on the table last night to find out what what making a clicking noise, which had just started the other day. Fortunately it didn't take real long, as it turned out to be a case fan. Will have to order a replacement for it. I left it disconnected as I couldn't stand the noise it was making.

Actually it didn't take that long as it was the very first thing I disconnected from the MB. Mind you, I'm usually not that lucky, as you may recall, from when my truck was acting up!
I also have constant ringing in my ears, which can make things a bit difficult at times, but hey, it could be worse!!!
@ A Guy Thats really bad my friend, but I like it!!!!

thank you guys for the quick.
one more strange thing I have to mention is that when I plugged the power cable of the computer to the power outlet,
my PC would immediately turn on even if I had not pressed the power button.
Is it related to CMOS problem?
My computer clock is sometimes wrong and I need to update the computer time by "time.windows.com"

Torch is UK/Irish slang for a flashlight. I've watched too much Doctor Who to not know that reference.

That might be a CMOS battery dead or dying as well, but it shouldn't make a noise. And if your computer turns on without pressing the power button, sounds like a setting in the BIOS or an improperly connected connection on your mobo.

Of course I know that, but what fun is that?
