    HDD issue

I am posting this on behalf of my friend , he got a problem with my Segate 500GB (Primary drive ). Today morning when he start my PC is got disk boot failure error, so he checked it in my bios . My hdd is detecting but its showing 0MB capacity .and a strange sound is also coming for the hdd , he have a secondary drive segate 1TB , checked the drive on another pc ,no result same issue . I think its platter motor have some issue
Here are the details of my hdd drive .
    Serial no.6VM0VZWG
    Model No.ST3500418AS
    P/N: 9SL142-300
    Firmware: CC34

Is this is possible to recover data using segate data recovery or any other 3rd party recovery tools or have to send it for RMA

Well, data storage rules no: one, two and three say ALWAYS keep a backup of any data which you consider even remotely important.

Unfortunately, strange sounds from the HDD is always a bad sign. Just a bout all 3rd party recovery software needs to actually see the drive to try to get anything off it. Even things like HDD Regenerator or Spinrite are going to be a waste of time because your PC can't see anything to recover data from.

There have been some weird and wonderful ideas to fix HDD's over the years from putting it in the freezer to dropping it if you think the head is stuck on the platters! If the circuitry had gone, you could have got an identical drive and swapped the boards over which sometimes works, but damage to the internals could only really be attempted by a professional company.

This could be a harsh lesson to learn for the future I'm afraid.....

The best way to get back the data is send it back to the manufacturer.
If the platter is fine, then they should be able to keep the data intact by just replacing the damaged parts that is if the parts are still available. You will have to let them know that you need to salvage the data in that hard drive which is why you are sending the drive back to them and not buying a new one.

I highly doubt sending it back to Seagate will do anything for your data, apart from lose it. They make very clear on their website that you will NOT get any data back that's on the drive as you won't get back your original drive but will receive a re-certified one. Your drive will just go on the extremely large 'faulty' pile to be repaired and re-certified sometime down the line.

Of course, there's no harm in trying, but unless somebody has actually successfully done this, I wouldn't get my hopes up!
