PC not recognising External USB Hard Drive

Hi Raymond,
I have a TOSHIBA MK4025GAS EXTERNAL USB HDD.
Im having problems with it when attached to my pc.
its working fine on my other computers.
Here are the list of issues for ur reference. Please help me out in this regard...

1. My external USB hard disk is plug & play. It is not detected in my computer. pop up comes in taskbar notification saying unknown device. even my friends external hard disk is not working in this computer.
But other devices like pendrive, memory stick are working just fine. I also tried it in other usb slots but same result.

2.I have done everything to update the driver but no use. i think its got something to do with the hardware settings of my computer.

3.i opened PC bios and here is how "cmos features" looks:
IDE PRIMARY MASTER: ST340810A
IDE PRIMARY SLAVE: NONE(inside this menu everthing is AUTO)
IDE SECONDARY MASTER: HLDTST-GCE-85273
IDE SECONDARY SLAVE: NONE(inside this menu everthing is AUTO)

4.i opened PC bios and here is how "integrated peripherals" looks:

both IDE CHANNELS ENABLED

And Raymond, another important thing is that the same problem is occuring in the windows 98 that i have in the same computer. i installed the drivers for 98 but still same unknown device error is coming. I have also taken screenshots but i dont know how to post them in this forum.

I hope i will get some solutions from u...im struggling...

May I know what is the motherboard of your computer?

Another thing you could do is try this device on a another computer, because then, if it still doesn't work, we can narrow down the problem.

Is this a portable external hard drive?

Since you did mention that this hard disk works on other computer, the problem surely is on your computer.

By the way, I couldn't find anything about HIS motherboard????

Ya its a portable hard disk.plug&play. Ya i know its got something to do with my pc.but what? Someone had suggested abt IDE. So i gav info abt bios setup.im a layman in hardware. So trying my best to give out info.
Maybe its H18 the motherboard. The font on the booklet is confusing.
Anybody got any clue why its not working?

I usually don't do this but there is this website called EverythingUSB and the forum mod over there has very good knowledge in USB. A lot of people are facing problems like you and perhaps you can get some info over there.

I've heard of this problem but I've never personally experience it.

I actually saw that link yesterday itself via google search. But i found it too complicated to understand. anyway thanks for your help...i shall post my query there and see how it goes.
