My son's computer died, I think the power supply went bad. It's an older computer, probably not worth trying to resurrect, but there are a few photos I would like to get off of the hard drive, but not so important that I want to spend a lot of time or money on it. I have read about sticking the hard drive in my computer as a slave, but don't want to try that. I also saw somewhere where you could get a case and stick the hard drive in it and make it an external hard drive. The first question is where can you find these cases and how much should they typically cost? The second question is if I completely disconnect everything from the dead computer could I simply use a usb cable to connect it to my computer and access the hard drive that way? Keep your answers not too technical as I'm not a techno geek, Thanks!

the easiest thing to do would be to just put the hard drive in another computer take a whole 10 mins and cost nothing
or you could buy a new power supply they are very cheap 20-50$ http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?Recs=10&Nav=|c:1077|&Sort=4
and to buy an external hard drive case would be about 20$ http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1733195&Sku=M501-1182

If you don't want to spend money, the easiest way is take out the hard drive and connect it to another computer as slave.
The second easiest way I'd say is get an external case which cost around $20. Then you can connect it to any computer and retrieve the data in there. You can also use the external hard drive as back up drive in future.
