Went today to pop a FDD into a computer I assembled last week. After power-up, I noticed the FDD LED was ON continuously. After Windows loaded, the A drive appeared in My Computer, and device manager advised everything was OK. But on insering a floppy, and opening A, a box asked to insert a floppy, etc, etc. I then assumed I had connected data lead incorrectly. Powered off, fixed this then rebooted to find, after POST, that a non systen device has been located, press any key to continue. But nothing happens. Apart from possible faulty device, any other thoughts? Thanks.

was the floppy disk still inserted when you have done the reboot?

When the floppy LED is lit up continuously, it is usually the IDE Floppy being fixed the wrong way. Since you've already fixed it, and got the non system device error, most probably you've forgotten to take out the floppy disk :P

Thanks guys. That is possibly what I have done. I cannot check on it now as my client is away for a week or so. When I do get access to his computer, I'll let you know if this was the problem.

I finally got the chance to check this out, and am now more confused than ever! Yes...I had left the floppy in the drive. But after removing it, system still cannot run a floppy in this drive. I tried the FDD in another desktop...it works fine. And two other FDDs I know to be OK will not work in this computer. Device Manager finds the FDDs, reckons they are healthy, drivers are up to date, etc, but on inserting a floppy, double-clicking on Drive A, a dialog box requests I put a floppy disc in the drive. As the mb is under warranty, before I pull it out and send it 300km back to supplier, is there anything else I could try? Thanks guys.

Is the LED for floppy still constantly lit up?

No Raymond...that was only originally when the lead was reversed.

For further H/W troubleshooting before you decide to replace your MB, try to swap working FDD or IDE cable into that box and see if it works.:)

I would seem to be making some progress here, but there still seems to be something wrong! After disconnecting, reconnecting leads and checking all connections, the FDD will now recognize there is a floppy disk in the drive and wants to format it. The file system appears as RAW, but the same floppy disk in another FDD correctly presents as FAT and the files on the floppy disk can be accessed. Any suggestions? Thanks guys.
