My computer wont autorun disc images
Hello, my computer will not autorun and disc images.
I have 2 disc drives the 1st is a cd/dvd player only and the second is cd/dvd writer both of the autoplay options are set. and the registry entry is set to 1 not 0, I thought maybe it was the drives so I tested it by making a couple of different iso images of installers with and an autorun.inf to run the setup:
[autorun]
open=setup.exe
I tested them in both of the drives and in PowerISO virtual drive and daemon tools Virtual drive and nothing on my com will autorun. no cds, .exe nothing.
Can you please help me (sorry if I put this in the wrong section but I dont know where the problem is and its rare I cant fix something on a com myself.

I thought this was going to be easy. If there was, it probably was the cause. I'll have to research this one a bit.
See if this works.
Right click My Computer, select the hardware tab, select Device manager, scroll down till you find DVD/CD-ROM DRIVES, expand it and right click on your CD Rom, select properties then properties again and UNTICK 'Enable digital CD audio for this CD Rom Device'
Which CD burning software have you installed if any?

Niether of my disc drives will autoplay either, I use Nero. Disabling digital audio didnt work.

Can you tell me the value of the following reg key? HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer NoDriveTypeAutorun
Just to make sure. Both autorun.inf and setup.exe are located in the root of the CD?

Hmmm I need to get up for work in 6 hours so I'll unfortunately have to leave you hanging. As for the reg value you can try a value of 94 which will allow unknown drives to autorun. I'm not sure if you have read the edit on my last post but make sure the autorun.inf file and setup.exe is located in the root of the CD. Furthermore you need to check if the CD drive is not indicated as a problem device in Device Manager. I don't know of any other key in the registry which will disable autorun so I don't think it is malware, although this is not excluded as a possabillity.

Yeah, I know quite well how the autorun works (I'm a local com tech myself), and I know quite well that it's not malware (I am an anti-virus!), but no onw knows everything and sometimes I have to ask for help too, so thank you for your time and i hope we can figure it out. Could it be something about have several virtual drives?

BTW, try applying the following registry patch :
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/autorunenable.reg
And restart you PC. (Or simply restart explorer.exe)
You must give a try to the XP TweakUI PowerToy. Basically, it too edits reg keys. But worth trying.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
Sometimes Antivirus products can also disable autorun for protection.
