I'm not sure, but you might be able to find out on the Ubuntu Forum, http://ubuntuforums.org/ or maybe one of the guys here on this forum would be good enough to keep you posted. For my personal use, I am trying out Mandriva at this time.

The modem you'd be better asking the forums of Ubuntu for that: I've given up on Wireless networking under Linux.

As for a good alternative for newbies, I like Mandriva Linux which is lighter and semi-simple to use. Fedora is nice too but you might get annoyed working with SELinux... hence why I don't recommend it.

I am using Ubuntu 11.04 now and I love it. I have made the switch from Windows and I don't miss it a bit.

Hopefully when my school allows me access to the MS products again, I can create some VMs and change completely over to Linux as well. Chances are good, I'll be using either Arch, Salix, or Debian, or something of the like.

I'm also debating about Debian or Ubuntu Server for my Server, since they'd be better for my learning. Was hoping for something RPM related, like CentOS, but right now, it doesn't work. I'll try it again though sometime.

Good for you jj1two3! I have been using Mandriva myself and really like it also.

I am using Scientific Linux 6.1. After some tweaks it satisfies my requirements. In fact it recognised my wifi, ethernet, USB dongle and my mobile gprs modem straightaway without needing to install additional drivers. Firewall is easier to configure. I needed to edit grub to dualboot with windows. Like CentOS it is based on RedHat Enterprise Linux and supported until atleast 2017 and I don't want to change distros every 6 months. SE Linux was enabled by default and I could not install Eset. Luckily I found policycoreutils-GUI which helps to edit SE Linux graphically. I have set SE Linux to permissive. I had to depend on google search and asking questions in forums to get it going. I still don't know any commands to use in command line. Just copy paste the commands given by experienced users

Heard of, haven't used it though. And I need something as a server, so if Scientific can fit that need, that will be very nice. And that's how most of us learn... it's how I've learned, take what people paste to me, and modify it, see how it works.
