Just checked it out, for the past two weeks. It's okay, but it's out of date on some things, I'm afraid Smalldog. As a rule, I try to avoid books on Linux though, since Linux is adapting so fast, any book that is written seems to be out of date quickly.

Thanks for the tutorials, (Nvdia Drivers)

    Hi,

I got the ubuntu CD yesterday, Thanks for the tutorials, I was able to successfully install ubuntu 8.10

and explore some of its applications

I have an inbuilt display of NVIDIA GeForce 7050 / NVIDIA nForce 610i. (ASUS P5N73-AM motherboard).

When i tried to chg. resolution It shows a max 800x600 option.

I understand I'll have to install nvidia drivers for Linux, I'm not connected to internet, I downloaded
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.09-pkg1.run from my friend Pc, but don't know how to install it.

If anyone has any idea, Please assist.

Also how can we login as a root in Linux, I have enabled root account and set the pwd. however when I

tried to login, a msg like "system administrator is not allowed to login from this screen" is displayed.

    Thanks in advance for assistance

    Regards,

    Try this.

BTW, why you want to login as root? It is neither recommended nor necessary. Most of times, any administrative command can be issued just by using “sudo” in front of the command.

when i double clicked the display driver file and chosse the option to run in terminal, installation started and halted asking me that you should be login as a root.

This why i wanted to login as root, (i.e inorder to install the nVdia Drivers).

However even after logging at root i failed in installing the driver, Err. msg i got something like this.

you are running X system, you need to close the X system ....

Hope i can install the Nvdia drivers for Linux

    Thanks for the help.

Are you not connected to the internet under Ubuntu? If you are, go to
    Code:
    System>Administration>Hardware Drivers
and see if it's under there. It's an easier way of installing them, IF Ubuntu detects it.

sorry however, I don't have an internet connection, have downloaded, NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.09-pkg1.run, from my friends PC, installing the drivers manually is the only option available, and being a new user am really not aware how this can be done.

Would be really great if someone good assist

    Thanks,

with some luck and googling(in a cyber cafe), I noted down commands for installation of Nvidia Driver, and tried, installing, but couldn't suceed, after confirmation of the dialog box "this means that the installer will need to compile a kernel interface... "

the progress bar went 100 % and then and err msg was thrown

ERROR: Unable to build the NVIDIA kernel module.
    ERROR: Installation has failed.

Please if anyone has any hint, would be greatly appreciate

    Thanks for all those help

This link gives the step by step instructions on how to install it. It's complex, but it's about as easy as I could find. However, you DO need to have internet connection with it. Reason being is that you have to download compiling tools, which if I remember right, aren't on the disk.

I tried the command (with out being connected to internet, as right now i don't have one at my home)

when i typed in following cmnd,
    sudo apt-get intall build-essential

    I got the msg
    E: Couldn't find package build-essential.

If there some way i can get drivers installed offline It's more than welcome.

Else the only option left for me will be to try the cmnds, when i may able to connect internet in Linux

Anyhow, Thanks a million for the support.

Are you running 8.10? Because I just checked in my Synaptic (System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager) and I've got it preinstalled (use the quick search on the top). If you have that as well, you can skip installing it. If you don't, I'll take a look on Google for it.

Also, it's install, not intall, but I assume that was a typing error when you posted the issue.
