How to Enable Wifi for ubuntu

i recently reformatted my laptop to ubuntu because it's vista cannot load anymore. however i cannot access my wifi at home. i cannot make a new connection. any suggestions? i am at a loss because i barely know how to use it

my new ubuntufied laptop has no sounds. where do i get the right drivers

You should look to see if your cards are supported by Linux. Best way would be to open terminal, (Programs>Accessories>Terminal) and type the following, posting the output to each.

sudo lshw -C network
lspci
lsusb

As for sound, open terminal again and type

alsamixer

, before turning everything up to max. See if that helps you any, if not, run

aplay -l

and post it's output.

You gave me little to work on, so these commands should give me some more info to run on, so you know.
