    Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit OS

I was noticing that 9.10 has a 64 bit version and since my computer has 64 bit capability, would there be any advantages to installing it in place of the 32 bit version I now run?

    Thanks! John

As I don't have a 64 bit computer, I don't know to be honest... but I figure you might as well try it out and see.

Hell yeah. The 64bit version will run faster as it uses the full potential of the CPU as kv777 said. in a few words: Your CPU is 64bit, with a 64bit OS, through the CPU passes double quantity of information compared the one that passes with a 32bit OS. It's simple.

    Screw Google! Ask me!

Thanks guys! I have a spare HDD that I can use, so I don't have to install 64 bit over the 32 bit version.

    best regards

Got Ubuntu 9.10 64bit up and running. So far I'm very impressed. Wish I hadn't bought Win 7 now, cuz a dual boot with Ubuntu and XP, which I already had, would have been plenty good for my purposes.

That makes absolutely no sense! Yes 64bit does make the CPU run slightly faster but it's just an instruction set that allows the CPU to address more RAM. So if you were to stick in more than about 3.2gb of RAM then the OS and the CPU can actually address that RAM. I would recommend 64bit though! Support for it now days is great, though I know hellnoire is just gonna come and have another agument with me over the awesomness of 64bit.

Har har, I'm not going to argue.. I just can't support it because I don't have a system that supports 64 bit myself. My dad does, and he's considering it with Windows 7
